We have chosen Cedar and Redwood for the same reasons homeowners choose them for their decks and siding. They both rank the highest in dimensional stability among commercially harvested softwoods, which means they split less, warp less, twist less and shrink less. They also hold stain better, and are virtually free of sticky pitch pockets and resins.

Cedar and Redwood are also naturally decay resistant, which means they do not have to be treated with possibly toxic chemicals to last for years outdoors. Our lumber purchasers visit the sawmills several times a year to select the highest quality lumber for your Rainbow Play System.

Rainbow Play Systems has mandated that our suppliers adhere to one of two major forest initiatives. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) calls for third-party inspections of forestlands for sustainability and habitat use. Certification has been set up to certify mills to produce “Certified Lumber.” Certified means timber has been approved to be harvested under an agreement reached in cooperation with scientists, environmental groups and foresters so as not to harm watersheds around streams, wildlife, soil erosion, and to ensure no one area is over-harvested.
